Fatima Zahra Hassan, widely known as Zahra, is an internationally acclaimed miniature painter, educator, and researcher whose lifelong practice has been dedicated to preserving and advancing the traditions of Indian, Mughal, Persian, and Islamic manuscript painting. A graduate of the National College of Arts, Lahore, she earned her Master's degree with Distinction from the Royal College of Art, London, before pursuing doctoral research in Visual Islamic and Traditional Arts at The Prince's School of Traditional Arts, London. Since 1994, Zahra has taught extensively across the UK, Pakistan, and the Middle East, conducting workshops and lectures at prestigious institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Museum, Asia House, the National Maritime Museum Greenwich, Shakespeare's Globe, and Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. She is regarded as one of the pioneers who introduced the practical study of Mughal and Persian miniature painting in the United Kingdom. An award-winning artist and scholar, Zahra has received the Schimmel Scholarship, World of Islam Award, Al-Tajir Trust Award, and Barakat Award, while also being recognized by The Daily Telegraph as the outstanding artist of the Royal College of Art Degree Show. Her work is held in distinguished public and private collections, including those of HRH King Charles III (formerly The Prince of Wales) and the Aga Khan Development Network. Beyond painting, Zahra has illustrated acclaimed children's books, researched the Art of the Book, Silk Route cultural exchange, and Islamic geometry, and founded the School of Miniature Painting London, continuing to inspire new generations of artists worldwide. Now based at the University of Sharjah, UAE, she remains an influential voice in traditional arts, seamlessly connecting centuries-old craftsmanship with contemporary scholarship.
